Investment Renewables offer a wide variety of solar PV and wind turbine products, which are all relatively accessible. Solar PV products tend to be more off the shelf due to the large quantities that they are manufactured in. We have good supply chains with large quantities of stock, which allows us to deliver our products within a relatively quick time frame.

Wind turbine systems are more niche than Solar PV products and it can take longer for their delivery. We keep a constant check on expected lead times so we can feed this into the project pipeline, keeping lead times to a minimum.

Installation

The step by step process for each installation will vary depending on the technology, size of system and complexity of installation. The smaller the system the easier it will be as there is fewer external factors that will potentially slow the process down. Once we have all the necessary permissions and agreements in place, we are in a position to arrange the physical construction of your system.

The first thing that needs addressing is the connection to the national grid. If your system will export less than 3.68kW’s per phase, we can arrange an appropriate time to begin any site preparation. If the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) has attached a cost to the connection, an appropriate time for your local DNO to come and complete the connection must be made. Lead times for this part of the process are usually between six and ten weeks. If your system is a stand alone system (not connected to the grid) then this phase of the installation can be bypassed.

The connection to the grid is one of the most important parts of the whole installation process. Without this permission in place you are breaking the law. When setting up the physical work related to the new connection, we liaise with the DNO and with a third party approved testing company. This company will test the system for compliance to G59/2. We must secure a date when our engineers can visit site and tie in with the two parties referred to above.

Wind turbine installation overview

Ground works: (3-5 days / turbine)*

  • Locate any underground or overhead services
  • Locate turbine site
  • Mark out foundation hole and cable trench
  • Dig trench, lay cable, add yellow safety tape and backfill
  • Construct foundation frame work
  • Lower foundation frame work into hole and level
  • Pour specified concrete into hole and screed level

Turbine erection and connection: (2-4 days / turbine)*

  • Locate tower base and fix in position
  • Locate tower sections (horizontally), fix in position
  • Attach generator to the end of the tower
  • Connect electrically
  • Attach blades to the generator
  • Ensure all parts are fitted correctly with correct torque settings
  • Attach power pack and raise turbine tower into vertical position
  • Torque in position
  • Install all wiring on both turbine and AC sides
  • Fit inverters and all switch gear in chosen location
  • Build kiosk if required
  • Complete test procedure
  • Run turbine

Floor mounted Solar PV installation overview

Ground Works: (1-3 days / kWp installed)*

  • Locate any underground or overhead services
  • Locate array site and mark out
  • Level land if required
  • Mark out fixing/foundation pad locations and cable trench
  • Dig trench, lay cable, add yellow safety tape and backfill
  • Dig foundation pads or drive piles

Array construction and connection: (1-3 days / kWp installed)*

  • Construct mounting frame work and fix in position
  • Level mounting frame
  • Fix solar panels to frame and torque as required
  • Connect all DC cables and route along back of mountings
  • Install all wiring for both DC and AC
  • Fit inverters and all switch gear in chosen location
  • Build kiosk if required
  • Complete test procedure
  • Switch array on

Roof mounted Solar PV installation overview

Array construction and connection: (1-2 days / 4kWp installed)*

  • Erect scaffold (pre installation start date)
  • Mark out fixing points
  • Remove tiles and cut where required
  • Fix all roof hooks to rafters
  • Flash roof hooks in where required
  • Fix all rails to roof hooks (no rails required on metal roof installations)
  • Fix solar panels to frame and torque as required
  • Connect all DC cables and route back through roof
  • Install all wiring for both DC and AC
  • Fit inverters and all switch gear in chosen location
  • Build kiosk if required
  • Complete test procedure
  • Switch array on
